A Study on Attitude of Future Optometrists Regarding Optical Shop Startup

Abstract
Purpose: This study was conducted with future optometrists who were attending the Department of Optometry and Optic Science, and aimed to determine the startup attitude held by future optometrists through the survey on attitude toward optical shop startup. The study results will be utilized as foundational data whether the startup-related issues will be applied to the curriculum.

Methods: Total of 178 future optometrists who were attending the Department of Optometry and Optic Science in Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions were surveyed, and statistical analysis was conducted.

Results: The results of interest rate of the future optometrists were ¡®very high¡¯ in 101 respondents (56.74%), and ¡®high¡¯ in 58 respondents (32.58%) which were relatively very high. The most answer about the startup time of optical shop was six to seven years after graduation and the most suitable work experience as an optometrist was also six to seven years at the time of startup of optical shop. The survey respondent preferred a ¡®franchise optical shop¡¯ 106 persons (59.55%) to ¡®Single startup optical shop¡¯ 67 persons (37.64%) as the preferred startup type of optical shop. The most desirable place of optical shop startup was ¡®Residential area¡¯ 60 persons (33.71%), and the most important factor at the startup time of optical shop was ¡®place and commercial power¡¯ 58 persons (32.58%). The most needed subject for optical shop startup training was ¡®optical shop management and accounting knowledge¡¯ 72 persons (40.45%).

Conclusions: The interest of the future optometrists who were attending the Department of Optometry and Optic Science in optical shop startup was very high, and the attitude toward startup type, important factors, startup places etc. was clearly exhibited. Based on the results above, it is necessary to investigate the adoption of startup-related curriculum to raise the awareness and stable and systematic startup preparation for future optometrists.
